Everyone makes fun of Linebeck for his crate. And I will agree, it's a ridiculous concept at first- a grown man hiding away in a crate to get away from his crazy ex-lover, while a random kid fights her.
But what if we're thinking about the crate all wrong. What if the original purpose of the crate is not for Jolene, but for miniblins?
Ok, so- in game there are only 8 ships piloted by hylians. We have imposter wind-waker (1), brother of the imposter wind-waker (2), Beedle (3), Jolene (4), the old wayfarer (5), the merchants in the SE sea (6), the Man of Smiles (7), and the SS Linebeck (8). Everything else is pirate ships piloted by hordes of miniblins.
Most people will first see Linebeck use the crate as a hiding spot when you fight Jolene. And this is probably where the seed gets planted that the crate is solely for Jolene's visits comes from. But, he uses that exact same crate when the miniblins board your ship.
Now, you can beat the entire game (not at 100%, but still beat it) without ever once having the miniblins board your vessel, so I don't blame people for forgetting that this is a thing they can do- especially when you have to try to even get them to board your ship.
But I think even more telling evidence is what happens when you encounter a vessel that's been overrun by the monsters.
The most common vessel to see this happen is in the 2nd vessel mentioned. On this vessel, you board the ship to see miniblins abound, and the ship's captain face-down on the floor. After you defeat all the miniblins, you talk to the guy and find out he's-thankfully- still alive, and he may just give you a treasure or two for your troubles.
You leave, and forget about it- but if you ever sail back to that ship, you'll find it overrun again. And this dude is, once again, face down on the floor.
The point being- I think playing dead is a legitimate strategy that most of the people still sailing use to fool the miniblins into leaving them alone. Linebeck, however, has found a way to avoid the threat of pitchforks being jabbed at him if he accidentally moves, and has just started hiding in a crate.
This is in character for him as, even when you first start sailing with him, there is no offensive capabilities on the vessel, whatsoever. He just has a jump mechanic too help him run away more effectively. If Linebeck truly is more of a runner than a fighter, I 100% believe he would use the "play dead" method over fighting the things any day.
Now, most people think Linebeck is a coward who lets Link do all his fighting- and while the fighting part is true, I would like to remind everyone of the fact that only 8 vessels are still in the water, and his ship is one of them. He would not be one of the only ones left if he was just a coward and dumb. And I don't believe he's alone in the "play dead" method either.
I actually believe the only person actively fighting the miniblins is Jolene- everyone else either plays dead, has attack crows that stop any miniblins wearing anything shiny from boarding, or keeps them locked in a cellar for gods know what reason.
But, when it comes to Jolene boarding the ship- well, he already has a crate good for hiding in during most other pirate attacks, why wouldn't it work on his ex? You know, the girl who likes to dress up like a pirate.
And, I mean, it technically does work. It stops her from attacking him right away, and allows the player to distract her until she gets bored enough to leave. We only find out she caught on because she outright tells us she knows where he's hiding during the last encounter.
But this is just another thought on a growing pile of "Linebeck wasn't really cowardly, he was just a normal guy- if not smarter than average- who we were constantly told was cowardly by the literal Spirit of Courage, who was traveling along with the former holder of the Triforce of Courage. There could not have been a more skewed judge of his character."
#phantom hourglass#legend of zelda#legend of zelda phantom hourglass#PH#linebeck#Theories for a dead portion of the fandom#But seriously tho#There is so much Linebeck slander#And most of it just comes from Ciela#You know#The Spirit meant to embody courage#She's like one step away from Farore in terms of her relationship with courage#She should not be the one we base Linebeck's character judgement on#Especially since she didn't even have all her powers during that first half of the game#So anytime he did do something actually out of his comfort zone#She just#Belittled him#Instead of actually helping him be braver

me, playing a game about asking for help, relying on your friends, not burying your feelings to please others, and not trying to do everything for yourself because it will destroy you if you try: wow this game will fundamentally change my outlook on life and make me a better person to myself
also me, less than a week later: you look sleepy so i’ll take all your paperwork that you were supposed to do. yes it’s 1am yes that means i’ll be up until like at least 3. what do you mean that’s not a smart move
#it’s not even. it’s not even the first time i’ve done this.#i just looked at him#this poor guy. he’s so anxious about everything#he feels like he needs to be the counselor he grew up with. but that is not him#he is trying to be everything he is not.#he needs to learn to be himself.#he needs to learn to be decisive and have courage and step out of his comfort zone#and how to take initiative and timely and prepare in advance#and check his phone please…..#but he’s also. he’s so tired.#he looked so dead.#and if i want him to take initiative tomorrow and lead a day. i need him to rest#i taught him the template. it’s fine. i can do the rest.

I am debating going for a trip either my friend tomorrow, I’m incredibly nervous tho, I have seizures just about every day still and even though my friend is very supportive she is also going through a lot of stress herself and is going through a big move right now.. my love thinks I should go , but I’m still debating weather it’s smart or if I’m too overwhelmed by the whole situation?
I’m really feeling a pull to make leaps and bounds towards the life I used to have or something that feels more like ME, I need to have more independence and more individuality.
I miss a life where I am free and brave and independent! I miss going places and feeling safe . Life is such a messy process that involves so many ups and downs, I want to come out of this down so far up that I’ve never been so much of ME ever in my life, I want it all to be worth it.
Anyway.. if I go on the trip I can’t take my pets and I won’t have my regular routine or comforts for a few days .. what to do

"Perhaps I reminisce because I cannot go. Perhaps I cannot go because my memory traps me here."
I had to travel for quite a long time today, so I unfortunately couldn't refine the third day drawing as much as I wanted to. However, I think it's a decent first attempt at an Ancient, and figuring out a design was pretty fun.

The Cheetah's Circular Path
In the heart of the African savannah, there dwelled a sleek and swift cheetah named Chester. With spots like ink blots upon his golden fur, he boasted of unmatched speed, capable of outrunning the swiftest gazelle.
Yet, despite his prowess, Chester possessed a peculiar habit—he ran in circles. Every morning, as the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, Chester would set off on his morning sprint, only to trace the same path time and time again, never venturing beyond the perimeter of his circular route.
The other animals of the savannah watched with puzzlement as Chester dashed round and round, his agile limbs carrying him effortlessly across the grasslands. The gazelles would pause mid-leap, the zebras would halt mid-stride, and even the wise old elephant would raise his trunk in curiosity.
"Why does Chester run in circles?" they would wonder aloud, exchanging puzzled glances and shaking their heads in bewilderment.
One day, the wise old owl perched atop a baobab tree decided to unravel the mystery of Chester's circular sprints. With a flap of his wings, he soared down to the cheetah's side and posed the question that had puzzled the savannah's inhabitants for so long.
"Why do you run in circles, dear Chester?" asked the owl, his amber eyes gleaming with curiosity.
Chester paused mid-stride, panting lightly as he considered the owl's inquiry. With a sheepish grin, he confessed, "I run in circles because I'm afraid to venture beyond what I know. The world beyond my familiar path is vast and unknown, and it scares me."
The other animals listened intently, their gazes softening with understanding.
The wise old owl nodded sagely, his feathers ruffling in the breeze. "But Chester, my dear friend, it is precisely the unknown that holds the greatest adventures and discoveries. Embrace the uncertainty, and you may find wonders beyond your wildest dreams."
Moved by the owl's words, Chester decided to break free from the confines of his circular route. With a newfound sense of courage, he bounded forward, his paws carrying him beyond the boundaries of his familiar path.
As Chester explored the vast expanse of the savannah, he encountered sights and experiences he had never imagined—hidden watering holes teeming with life, towering acacia trees adorned with succulent fruits, and breathtaking vistas that stretched to the horizon.
From that day forth, Chester's sprints no longer followed a circular path. Instead, he roamed the savannah with boundless curiosity, his agile form a blur of motion against the backdrop of the African landscape.
And so, the fable of Chester the cheetah taught the animals of the savannah a valuable lesson—that true growth and discovery lie beyond the confines of our comfort zones, and it is only by embracing the unknown that we can truly unleash our full potential.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow across the grasslands, Chester continued his journey into the unknown, his spirit soaring with the promise of adventure that lay ahead.
And the animals of the savannah watched with admiration, knowing that Chester had found his true stride in the boundless expanse of the world beyond his familiar circles.
